Dr. Mitchell fabricates an appliance called a FOSA, short for FACE*Orthopedic Stabilizing Appliance. Many, but not all, TMD problems with the jaw and muscles of the jaw are caused by bite interferences. The FOSA is fabricated to eliminate these interferences. If interferences are the source of the TMD (pain in the face muscles, pain in the TMJs, locking of the jaw, headaches) the appliance can improve, and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of TMD. Often, for complete resolution of symptoms due to occlusal interferences, further treatment would be required. Please see the attached brochure for more information on the FOSA.
